What happened when my family member transferred money to an unintended recipient ?
One of my family member transferred around 7k to an unintended recipient through the Gpay app. I tried contacting the recipient by sending messages through the app, however, the recipient neither replied nor transferred the money back to us. Through the app we couldn't get any contact details to get in touch with the recipient.
We contacted our bank requesting them to contact the receiving bank to help us get the money back. Through the tollfree customer care, we were given a Complaint Number. We followed up with the bank with the complaint number, however, it seem to be of no help. Later, I dropped a mail to the bank mentioning that the complaint has not yet been addressed. There was no response.
I tried to raise the complaint through National Consumer Forum (I have raised several grievances here and they have been redressed). But to my surprise, there was no response even through this and they had advised me to contact the Banking Ombudsman.
At this point of time, I raised the grievance through RBI's CMS portal. I got call from our bank asking us to visit the bank to sign an affidavit which is necessary whenever there is inadvertent transfer of money to another bank. Since my family member was a senior citizen, the bank was considerate enough to visit our home and get the affidavit signed. We were informed that the recipient's bank account has been debit freezed for Rs.7k and whenever there is sufficient amount in that account, it would be transferred to us. After a week, finally, the amount was transferred to us.
Subsequent to this incident, I try to follow the points below, whenever there is a financial transaction :
1. Double check the recipient before transfer of money
2. Any grievance with regard to any service, a written communication and a reminder to the service provider is must to save our case.
3. Be it any industry where your grievance lies, approaching the regulator of that industry helps to solve the grievance quickly.
